The world of dental loupes can be very confusing; so we've put together this set of questions to help you compare between loupes and choose the ones that are correct for you.

  • What is the field of view? This could be rephrased as 'how many teeth can you see when you look through the telescopes'. This will determine how comfortable you feel with your loupes; a wider field of view allows instruments to be passed to you more easily and avoids you having to reposition yourself when patients move. During endodontic procedures, it is useful to see adjacent structures to help with alignment and drilling in the true long axis of the tooth.

  • What is the depth of focus? i.e what vertical distance will be in focus when I look through the telescopes. All lenses have a depth of field above and below which objects appear out of focus. The range that remains in focus is important to consider as it'll determine your freedom of motion. Static postures frequently result in muscle fatigue, imbalances and muscle ischaemia. This, over time, can present as pain especially when maintained for long periods throughout the working day and repeated on a regular basis.

  • What is the frame material? the rigidity of the frame is important to avoid misalignment of the telescopes over time. This is why we do not do plastic sports frames but use aerospace grade ultra-light anodised aluminium alloy which covers the entire carrier lens. The frame arms should be flexible to survive flexing over the years and therefore, must be made of a different material to the rest of the frame. The hinges should avoid spring mechanisms which are destined to irreparably loosen and instead use double barrel hinges.

  • What is the overall weight and weight distribution of the loupes? You should consider the weight as well as weight distribution of the loupes/headlight combination. As you could be wearing your loupes/light combination for many hours every day you want to ensure they are fit for prolonged use. The smartest designs feature counterbalances to lift the weight off your nose.

  • What clarity lenses do you use? The higher the clarity the more clearly you'll be able to resolve detail. The resolving power of the lenses can be determined by looking at USAF targets pioneered by the United States Air Force. Our prismatic lenses can resolve at 57.03lp/mm.

  • Where are your offices based? Local support in your local language is critical as you will become dependent on your loupes/light. If something goes wrong, you want someone on the other end of the phone asap. Our HQ is just 30 minutes from London. Come and visit our labs! We also have a team in the UAE, Australia and Netherlands :)

  • What is your warranty and after-care policy? We have you covered for 5 years.

  • How many measurements do you take? We take 16 and a 3D scan of your head. By assessing your nose bridge to ear position, we can ensure optimised declination angles.

Bryant Dental was founded by dentists with every detail in mind. Our loupes will outperform competitors on all these points and more. But don't take our word for it..read the reviews :)
