The ideal magnification depends on several factors, including the type of work being performed as well as the individual working distance of the user. The further away one sits from an object, the smaller it appears and the same is true with magnification.

For a first pair of loupes, many of our clinicians love the 2.5 - 3.5x magnification range as it provides a larger field of view (how many teeth you can see) and larger depth of focus (how far you can move in and out before it becomes blurry).

For more intricate work (eg. endodontics, crown & bridge), a higher magnification such as 3.5x and beyond is advised. Many of our clinicians use 5.0x magnification and above for general and routine dentistry due to the large field of view our loupes provide (the whole arch even at 5.0x magnification!).

Ultimately, when deciding which Loupes or Refractives are right for you, consider the main procedures you undertake on a daily basis, and whether you generally undertake work which requires a full face field of view, or whether you tend to do high precision single tooth dentistry.

The greater the field of view at any magnification, the more flexible your loupes are to the way you work! To try on our loupes, book a demo now.
