The most common reason the image through loupes can appear blurry is because the object is outside of the focal range/depth.

The depth of field (or focus) of loupes determines the range of distances in which the object remains in focus. It determines how much you can lean into or away from the object without it becoming blurry.

When you are outside of this focal range the image can become blurry and this will mean you need to move closer or further away from the object to bring it back into focus.

Some other common causes include:

  1. Uncorrected prescription: If the prescription of the loupes is not correct for the wearer's eyes (or indeed, not accounted for at all), it can cause the image seen through the loupes to appear blurry. This is because the lenses in the loupes are designed to correct for a specific level of refractive error (nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism) in the wearer's eyes. If the prescription of the loupes does not match the wearer's refractive error, it can cause the image seen through the loupes to be distorted and blurry.

  2. Improper fit: Loupes should be fitted properly to ensure that they are comfortable and effective. If your loupes are not fitted properly, they can cause distortion and blurriness in the image.

  3. Incorrect alignment: Loupes should be aligned properly with your eyes to ensure that the image is clear and sharp. If the loupes are not aligned properly, the image may be distorted and blurry. This can especially be the case when the loupes have been self-adjusted as with flip-up style loupes.

  4. Outdated or damaged lenses: Over time, the lenses in loupes can become scratched or damaged, which can cause blurriness in the image. If your loupes are old or have been damaged, the lenses may need to be replaced to improve the image quality.
