Dental school requirements vary greatly from country to country and even school to school. Many universities across the USA and Australia have a compulsory requirement to purchase loupes in order to train better posture and allow increased visibility of the working field.

Loupes provide magnification, meaning you can sit up straighter and don’t have to twist your spine in order to see fine details in the mouth such as cracks on teeth or interproximal caries. Even higher magnifications allow increased visualisation beneficial for fine-detail work such as endodontics and crown/bridge procedures (or indeed any restorative).

Additionally, using loupes can reduce neck and back strain, as well as eye strain and fatigue. This can make it more comfortable to perform procedures for extended periods of time, and can help to prevent strain-related injuries.
